Keeping Busy!
January Daily Challenge: I started the year off doing the Strada
challenge, which involved painting or drawing from life daily. I wasn't
sure I could really do it, but I made my art practice a priority and
successfully completed the month! While I did some still life and
figure drawings, I found painting inspiration in the fruit and
vegetable aisle at the grocery. It's amazing how many different shades
of reds, greens, and yellow exist side by side. The reds of peppers,
cabbages and radishes are vastly different, as are the greens of
scallions, grapes and poblano peppers. Exploring color and working alla
prima resulted in vibrant and exciting paintings that I'm happy to
finally share!

There's More: While I'd love to say that I've continued to paint daily,
I can't. But I haven't been idle either. I've been taking two weekly
figure and portrait classes (One with Gavin Glakas at Yellow Barn and
one with Susan O'Neill at The Art League); I took a 3-day figure and
portrait workshop with Robert Liberace (Art League) and have been
painting plein air whenever I can! I've also been teaching two classes
- one drawing and one painting. My painting "Under the Bridge" was
juried into the Capital Hill Art League Show "In the City" and I had 3
painting at the MAA Spring Festival Show at Windridge Vineyards. I also
painted plein air at the vineyards during the festival. I can't wait to
share some of newer work with you on my website, at my studio, and in
local shows.
The Challenges of Plein Air: This painting was done on the Potomac
River while Maryland rescue crews were training. It was so interesting
to see them in action. Unfortunately, it was my painting that needed
rescuing. It was an incredibly windy day and when I bent over to get a
brush, my easel blew over, hit me in the head, and my painting hit the
sand. Making matters worse, I dropped it while walking to my car! But,
I learned that submerging the painting in water removes most of the
dirt and sand. Fitting with the theme of the day, my painting was
rescued!
